The foremost DApp platform at the time of writing, proposed and founded by Vitalik Buterin in 2013. Development was funded by an online crowdsale that took place between July and August 2014. The system went live on 30th July 2015. Ethereum provides a Turing-complete virtual machine, known as the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), that allows for open-source, public and blockchain based distributed computing, using smart contract functionality. The DApps that can be built on the Ethereum platform range widely in use cases, from prediction markets and identity systems, to games and social media platforms. Ethereum is the second largest blockchain by market cap, worth an estimated $202bn on CoinMarketCap as of 8th February, 2023.
